Protect your chickens from red mites with Mite Moat
Introducing Mite Moat
Mite Moat utilizes a unique dual water moat system installed on the coop walls. This innovative design creates a physical water barrier that prevents mites from reaching the roosting bars, their primary breeding ground.
But Mite Moat doesn't stop there! The included roosting bar features a special grip tape sprinkled with diatomaceous earth (DE), a natural, non-toxic substance deadly to mites. This two-pronged approach ensures maximum protection for your flock.
Mite Moat is incredibly easy to install and maintain, requiring minimal effort on your part. Simply attach the moat to your coop walls, fill it with water, and sprinkle on some of the included DE onto the perch.
Give your chickens the gift of a healthy, mite-free environment with Mite Moat. Order yours today and experience the peace of mind that comes with knowing your flock is safe from these harmful pests!
Red mites
Red mites are night-time predators. These tiny spiders (Dermanyssus gallinae) can only crawl. They can't fly, jump or swim. They lurk in cracks and crevices of the coop during the day, but come nightfall, they emerge. These little vampires crawl onto the roosting bars where chickens sleep. They feast on the chickens' blood for one to two hours, turning themselves a bright red in the process. After their fill, the engorged mites retreat back into the coop's dark corners until the next night's feeding frenzy.
How red mites affect your chickens
While a light infestation of red mites might cause chickens some annoyance, a full-blown attack can be a nightmare for your flock. The constant irritation disrupts sleep, leading to stress and a drop in egg production.
Even worse, red mites can consume a significant amount of blood in one sitting. With hundreds or even thousands of mites feeding each night, your chickens can become anaemic. This translates to pale combs and wattles, weakness, and even death in severe cases.
Keeping red mites at bay
Eliminating red mites entirely can be a never-ending battle. These persistent pests are excellent hitchhikers and can easily be introduced to your coop on wild birds, new chickens, or even on your own clothes. However, despair not! By implementing a multi-pronged approach of regular coop cleaning, utilizing effective mite control products, and maintaining a healthy environment for your chickens, you can effectively suppress red mite populations and keep them from becoming a persistent problem for your feathered friends.

About Us
We're two chicken enthusiasts living the life in the countryside, just outside of Cambridge in England. Like many backyard flock owners, we were plagued by the pesky problem of red mites. Tired of harsh chemicals and frustrated by the limitations of existing solutions, we decided to take matters into our own hands.
Mite Moat wasn't born in a boardroom, it hatched in our coop! We spent countless hours tinkering, testing, and perfecting a long-lasting solution to keep those bloodthirsty mites at bay. Now, we handcraft every Mite Moat right here in our workshop, using only durable materials and small-batch craftmanship.
We understand the joys and challenges of raising chickens, and we're passionate about creating products that make life easier for both you and your feathered friends. So, join us on our mission to create a mite-free future, one coop at a time!
